ISU Extension Master Gardeners are rain garden advocates. They install them, often using native plants that have deep roots to hold water, and they use the gardens to demonstrate their value.
The Council Bluffs area has 54 rain gardens that in the past year captured 1.6 million gallons of rainwater that might otherwise have run off directly into streams and rivers. Rain gardens help filter out fertilizers, drippings from autos and other pollutants while they recharge aquifers.
